What Is a Receptacle?

A receptacle is a wiring device that provides connection points for plugs from electrical equipment. The device transfers power from a branch circuit to a cord through contact openings, while its design may include grounding, tamper resistance, or ground-fault protection. Receptacle describes the installed device, while outlet often serves as the everyday name.

Key Takeaways About Receptacle

  • A receptacle is the installed device behind an everyday outlet.
  • Grounding and protective features depend on the receptacle type.
  • An outlet and a receptacle often describe the same device.

How Receptacle Works

Receptacle

A receptacle connects a plug to the conductors in a branch circuit. Spring contacts inside the device grip the plug blades and transfer power to the connected cord. A grounding contact provides a path for equipment grounding when the wiring and plug include that connection.

Receptacles come in designs suited to different locations and uses. A ground-fault circuit interrupter receptacle monitors current balance and can disconnect power when leakage occurs. A tamper-resistant receptacle adds internal shutters that help prevent unwanted access to the energized contacts. The correct device depends on the circuit, wiring arrangement, location, and equipment served.

During outlet installation, the device is secured in an electrical box and connected to the circuit conductors. The faceplate covers the assembly and helps protect the wiring. A receptacle that feels loose, shows heat damage, or fails to hold plugs can need repair or replacement.

From the Cincelux Electric team

When we install a receptacle, we check the circuit conductors, grounding path, box condition, and device fit. We also test polarity and protective functions that apply to the selected device. Our team matches the receptacle to the equipment and location, not just the faceplate appearance.

Receptacle in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner wants a new receptacle near a workbench for cord-connected tools. The installation must account for the existing branch circuit, grounding, box space, and the type of protection required for that location.
