Ampacity
Ampacity is the maximum Electrical current a conductor can carry continuously under specific conditions without exceeding a safe temperature rating. Ampacity depends on conductor size, insulation type, ambient temperature, and installation method, so the same wire may have different allowable current values in different settings.
Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter
Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter is a protective Electrical device that detects dangerous arcing conditions in wiring and disconnects power before heat can start a fire. Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter protection is commonly required on many residential branch circuits. Is designed to respond differently than standard breakers.
Circuit Breaker
Circuit Breaker is an automatic Electrical safety switch that stops current flow when overloads or short circuits occur. Unlike a fuse, a circuit breaker usually resets after a fault is cleared, which makes circuit breaker devices standard protection in panels for homes, offices, and industrial equipment.
Conduit
Conduit is a protective raceway that encloses. Routes Electrical conductors through a building, underground, or across exposed surfaces. Conduit may be metal or nonmetallic. Electrical codes often require conduit where wiring needs added mechanical protection. Moisture resistance, or a defined grounding path.
EMT Conduit
EMT Conduit is Electrical Metallic Tubing. A thin-walled metal raceway that protects routes insulated Electrical conductors inside buildings. EMT Conduit is lighter than rigid metal conduit usually installed in dry. Damp locations where corrosion exposure and physical damage are limited.
Electrical Code
Electrical Code is a set of legally adopted rules that govern Electrical design, installation, materials, and safety practices in buildings and systems. Electrical Code requirements often specify grounding, overcurrent protection, wiring methods, and equipment clearances to reduce shock, fire, and inspection failures.
Electrical Grounding
Electrical Grounding is the intentional connection of Electrical systems. Equipment to the earth or to a grounded conductor to limit dangerous voltage direct fault current safely away. Proper grounding helps breakers or fuses operate during faults reduces shock risk and equipment damage.
Electrical Panel
Electrical Panel is the main distribution point that receives incoming power. Routes electricity through circuit breakers to branch circuits in a building. Electrical panels are rated for specific amperage and voltage. Safe service requires correct sizing, labeling, grounding, and overcurrent protection.
Electrical Permits
Electrical Permits are official approvals issued by a local building authority before certain wiring. Panel, service, or equipment work may begin. Electrical Permits typically require plan review. Inspection to verify code compliance. Public safety during new construction, alterations, or major repairs.
Electrical Resistance
Electrical Resistance is the opposition a material. Component presents to electric current flow. Higher resistance limits current and converts more Electrical energy into heat. Which is why resistance is a key factor in wire sizing. Circuit design, heating elements, and overload prevention.
Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter
Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter is a safety device that quickly shuts off Electrical power when current leaks from a circuit to ground, which reduces shock risk. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter protection is commonly required near bathrooms. Kitchens, garages, outdoor receptacles, and other damp or wet locations.
Grounding Electrode
Grounding Electrode is a conductive element that connects an Electrical grounding system to earth. Common examples include ground rods, concrete-encased electrodes, and metal building steel, and Electrical codes define acceptable materials, installation methods, and when one or more electrodes must form a grounding electrode system.
Insulation Resistance
Insulation Resistance is the opposition that Electrical insulation presents to leakage current between conductors or from a conductor to ground. Higher insulation resistance usually indicates cleaner, drier, and less damaged insulation, and electricians commonly measure insulation resistance during testing with a megohmmeter.
Junction Box
Junction Box is an enclosed Electrical housing that contains wire splices connection points within a circuit. A junction box protects conductors from damage and contact. Electrical codes generally require the box to remain accessible for inspection, maintenance, and future troubleshooting.
Load Calculation
Load Calculation is the process of determining the Electrical demand a building. Circuit is expected to place on a power system. Electricians use code-based methods to size service equipment, feeders, and branch circuits so conductors and overcurrent devices match expected demand safely.
NEC
NEC is the National Electrical Code, a widely adopted U.S. Standard that sets minimum requirements for safe Electrical design, installation, and inspection. NEC is updated on a regular cycle. Is commonly enforced by local building departments to reduce fire hazards and shock risks.
Neutral Wire
Neutral Wire is the grounded conductor in an Electrical circuit that carries current back to the source under normal operation. Neutral Wire is typically bonded to ground at the main service equipment. Which helps stabilize voltage and supports overcurrent device operation during certain fault conditions.
Ohm's Law
Ohm's Law is the basic Electrical relationship between voltage, current, and resistance in a circuit. Electricians and engineers use Ohm's Law to calculate how much current will flow when voltage and resistance are known, which helps verify safe equipment operation and proper circuit design.
Overcurrent Protection
Overcurrent Protection is the use of devices that interrupt electric current when current exceeds safe levels in a conductor or piece of equipment. Common overcurrent protective devices include fuses and circuit breakers. Which are selected to match conductor ampacity and fault conditions.
Panelboard
Panelboard is a distribution assembly that houses busbars. Overcurrent devices in a cabinet. Directs Electrical power to branch circuits within a building. Panelboard typically mounts on a wall. Allows individual circuit protection, isolation, and maintenance access from one central location.
Photocell Sensor
Photocell Sensor is a light-sensitive Electrical control that detects ambient brightness. Changes circuit operation based on light levels. A common use is automatic outdoor lighting. Where a photocell sensor turns fixtures on at dusk. Off at dawn without manual switching.
Receptacle
Receptacle is a wiring device that provides a contact point for a plug to connect portable equipment to a building Electrical circuit. A receptacle is commonly installed in walls floors may include grounding. Tamper resistance, or ground-fault protection where Electrical codes require such features.
Residential Electrical Wiring
Residential Electrical Wiring is the system of conductors, cables, outlets, switches, and protective devices that delivers electricity throughout a home. Residential Electrical wiring must match household loads. Follow Electrical code requirements, and separate branch circuits for lighting, receptacles, appliances, and safety equipment.
Romex Cable
Romex Cable is a common brand name for nonmetallic sheathed Electrical cable used to carry power through insulated copper conductors inside a flexible plastic jacket. Romex Cable is typically installed in dry indoor locations for branch circuits in wood-frame homes and similar buildings.
Short Circuit
Short Circuit is an unintended Electrical connection that lets current travel along a low-resistance path between conductors or to ground. Short circuits usually produce excessive current and heat, so fuses. Circuit breakers are designed to interrupt short-circuit faults before equipment damage or fire occurs.
Surge Protector
Surge Protector is a device that limits brief overvoltage spikes by diverting excess Electrical energy away from connected equipment. Common surge protectors use metal oxide varistors. Are installed in power strips, receptacles, or service panels to help reduce damage from lightning, utility switching, and motor cycling.
Thermal Overload
Thermal Overload is excessive heat in a motor, wire, or Electrical device caused by current that stays above safe design limits. Thermal overload protection commonly uses a heat-sensitive relay. Breaker that opens the circuit before insulation damage. Motor winding failure, or fire risk develops.
Transformer
Transformer is an Electrical device that transfers energy between circuits through electromagnetic induction. Changes voltage or current without changing frequency. Transformers commonly step voltage up for efficient power transmission. Step voltage down for safer use in buildings and equipment.
UL Listing
UL Listing is a certification mark showing that a product was tested by Underwriters Laboratories and met recognized safety requirements. UL Listing commonly appears on Electrical equipment, appliances, and components that are intended for installation and use under specific conditions stated by the manufacturer.
Voltage Drop
Voltage Drop is the reduction in Electrical voltage as current moves through a conductor or circuit component. Excessive voltage drop can cause lights to dim. Motors to run poorly, and electronic equipment to malfunction, especially on long wire runs or undersized conductors.
Voltage Rating
Voltage Rating is the maximum voltage a device, wire, or insulation system can safely withstand during normal operation. A voltage rating must match. Exceed the circuit voltage because undervalued components can overheat, arc, or fail even when current remains within design limits.
Wattage
Wattage is the rate at which Electrical power is used or produced, measured in watts. Higher wattage generally means greater energy demand. Output, which helps electricians size circuits, select fixtures, and verify that equipment matches the capacity of a power source.
Wire Gauge
Wire Gauge is a standardized measure of a wire's diameter and current-carrying capacity. In common Electrical systems, a lower gauge number indicates a thicker conductor, which usually allows more amperage and less voltage drop under the same installation conditions.
Wire Nut
Wire Nut is a twist-on Electrical connector that joins two more conductors inside a wiring enclosure. A wire nut has an insulating shell. An internal spring that grips stripped wire ends, and correct sizing. Conductor compatibility are required for a secure code-compliant connection.
