What Is a Transfer Switch?

A Transfer Switch is an electrical switching device that moves selected circuits between a utility supply and a backup generator. The switch prevents both power sources from feeding the same circuit at once. Transfer switches may operate manually or automatically, depending on the system design, generator controls, and required level of outage response.

Key Takeaways About Transfer Switch

  • A transfer switch separates utility power from generator power.
  • The device serves selected circuits or an entire electrical panel.
  • A transfer switch is not the same as a generator interlock.

How Transfer Switch Works

Transfer Switch

A transfer switch monitors or receives control of the electrical source serving connected circuits. During a utility outage, an automatic model signals the generator to start and shifts the selected load to generator power. A manual model requires a person to operate the switch after confirming that the generator is ready.

The switch keeps the utility source and generator source separated during the changeover. Its connection points, enclosure, control wiring, and circuit capacity must match the generator system and the loads served. A generator interlock performs a related function at a load center by mechanically blocking incompatible breaker positions, while a transfer switch uses dedicated switching equipment.

From the Cincelux Electric team

When we inspect a transfer switch, we trace the source conductors, load conductors, control wiring, and grounding connections. We also check whether the selected circuits match the generator system and whether the switch changes sources without leaving an unintended connection between utility and generator power.

Transfer Switch in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Cincinnati home may have a transfer switch that sends generator power to the furnace, refrigerator, sump pump, and selected lighting circuits during an outage. The switch disconnects those circuits from utility power before connecting them to the generator.
