What Is an LED Driver?

An LED driver is an electronic power-control device that supplies light-emitting diodes with the voltage or current they need to operate safely. The driver converts incoming electrical power into a form the LED fixture can use. It may be built into the fixture or installed as a separate component.

Key Takeaways About LED Driver

  • An LED driver regulates power for LED components.
  • A failed driver can make a fixture flicker or stop working.
  • An LED driver is not the same as a dimmer switch.

How LED Driver Works

A person connects red and black wires to a white LED driver on a wooden desk

An LED driver changes incoming electrical power into output that matches the needs of an LED light source. Some drivers regulate current, while others regulate voltage. The correct output depends on the fixture design, so a replacement must match the LED assembly and the electrical system.

During commercial lighting repair, a failing driver may appear as flickering, delayed startup, uneven brightness, or a dark fixture. Technicians check the supply wiring, connections, driver output, and LED module before identifying the failed part. A constant-current driver supports LEDs that require controlled current. A constant-voltage power supply serves systems designed for a fixed voltage.

From the Cincelux Electric team

When we inspect an LED fixture, we check the incoming power and the driver output before replacing parts. Our team also compares the replacement driver with the fixture label and wiring so the repair matches the original electrical design.

LED Driver in Practice: A Real-World Example

A commercial ceiling fixture begins flickering and then goes dark. We inspect the connections and find that the LED driver is failing, so the repair focuses on the driver and its compatibility with the fixture.
