What Is Voltage Drop?
Voltage Drop is the reduction in electrical pressure that occurs as current travels through a wire, cable, connection, or other circuit component. The reduction results from electrical resistance and becomes more noticeable when a circuit carries a heavier load or uses a long, undersized, or damaged conductor.

Key Takeaways About Voltage Drop
- Voltage Drop occurs across resistance in a circuit.
- Long runs and weak connections can increase the loss.
- Voltage Drop is not the same as a short circuit.
How Voltage Drop Works

Voltage Drop occurs as electrical current moves through resistance in a circuit. Wire length, conductor size, connection quality, and the connected load all affect the amount of lost voltage. A circuit may show normal voltage with little demand and a lower reading when equipment operates.

An electrician checks voltage at the power source and at the load while the circuit is operating. The difference between those readings shows how much voltage the circuit loses along its path. Testing across connections can also reveal a loose terminal or damaged splice. A large change often points to a wiring condition that needs closer inspection.

From the Cincelux Electric team
When we troubleshoot a suspected Voltage Drop, we compare readings at the source and at the operating load. Our team also checks terminals, splices, wire condition, and the circuit path. This approach helps separate a wiring problem from equipment that is drawing power unevenly.
Voltage Drop in Practice: A Real-World Example
A customer notices that a motor struggles when it starts. Testing shows stronger voltage at the panel than at the motor while the motor runs, which points to Voltage Drop along the circuit path.
